Bringing cooler temperatures, less daylight, and harsher weather, the autumn months are the perfect time for some car maintenance. You can change the oil, check tires, get new wipers, and more. Not only can regular maintenance prevent breakdowns, but it can even extend the life of your car. Here's a list of just some of the things you can do to prepare for the fall.

Oil and Filter Change

Oil should be changed on most cars every six months or 7,500 miles (or less on older, high-performance, or highly-used vehicles). That means the summer/fall and winter/spring changes of seasons are roughly the right time for new oil. Clean oil will lubricate your engine, keep it clean, and move heat away from moving parts. Often called the lifeblood of your vehicle, oil should be changed regularly in order to keep your car running in optimum condition.

Check Tire Pressure

Tire pressure varies depending on temperature. In fact, with every 10-degree decrease in temperature, you'll lose around one psi. Underinflated tires are not only dangerous, but the added friction can even cause you to lose fuel economy. Checking and filling tires is an easy way to do regular service.

Replace Wipers

Wipers should be replaced at least once a year to help you get ready for the winter. You don't want to be caught off guard when you really need your wipers to work. It's also important to check and fill the washer fluid every once and a while as well. Just like the wipers, you don't want to run out of washer fluid when you need it.

Clean Out Your HVAC

Aside from cleaning out the interior of your vehicle, you should also take time to clean the HVAC system (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) if necessary. You can change the in-cabin air filter if you have one. This will keep your car smelling fresh and clean. It's also a good idea to spray out the vents with compressed air and to dust around openings. This will also help get rid of mold and mildew particles caught in your car.
